MISSION & VISION
Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 21 suffering
from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality
hair prosthetics.
Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to
provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on
a sliding scale, based on financial need.
Who Gets the Hair Pieces
Our recipients are financially disadvantaged children, age 21 and under, suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis such
as:
Alopecia areata - Radiation to the brain stem for cancer treatment - Skin disorders - Ectodermal dysplasia
Loose anagen syndrome - Telogen Eefluvium - Trauma-burns, accidents, dog attacks, etc.
Benefits to Children
The prostheses are different from synthetic hair pieces because they form a vacuum seal, and only the wearer of the prosthesis may
remove it. This sense of security allows the children to get back their self-confidence and be kids again.
- Cannot be pulled off by other children
- Children can play, swim and even shower with the hairpiece on.
- No glue or tape is required so children with skin sensitive’s can wear them
Manufacturing Process
The hair piece takes between 4-6 months and costs between $3,500 and $6,000 to make. The cost of the manufacturing is paid for by
donations received from people like you. Here is what it takes to make the hair piece.
- A molding kit and instructional DVD are sent to show parents how to make a plaster cast mold of the child's head.
- From this mold, a plastic fitting cap is made. This custom fitting cap is what provides the vacuum seal function.
- The child is able to choose the color and length of the hair they would like as well as the skin tone color of the silicone base
- Between 6 and 10 ponytails are use and each strand of hair is hand injected into the silicone base up to 150,000 times.

Hair Donation Guidelines .
Hair needs to be 10" or longer and in healthy condition.
Guidelines for acceptable donations:
-If you are not sure if your hair falls within our guidelines or have question about any products you have used, please consult one of
our stylists
-Hair that is colored or permed is acceptable.
-Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been stored in a ponytail or braid.
-Layered hair is acceptable if the longest layer is 10 inches, and may be divided into multiple ponytails.
-Curly hair may be pulled straight to measure the minimum 10 inches.
-10 inches measured tip to tip is the minimum length needed for a hairpiece.
-Hair that has been bleached (usually this refers to highlighted hair) is not usable. If unsure, ask your stylist. We are not able to

-Hair that is shaved off and not in a ponytail or braid is not usable. You may divide your hair into multiple ponytails, and cut each one
